Older People – a bonus, not a burden
‘Older people – a bonus, not a burden’ showcases the views of Older People in ‘doorstep interviews’ filmed during ‘lockdown’, in the summer of 2020.
Many Older People will tell you that although we may be a bit slower because of stiff joints we are still the same person we have always been inside – people who have worked hard in various occupations, raised families and lived busy, interesting and varied lives in society.
With this in mind, we ventured to counter the stereotyping of Older People as frail, weak, and burdensome by undertaking this filming project.
We want to show that we may be very mature but we are still living worthwhile lives, working, volunteering and contributing to our communities whilst still having lots of fun. We also share what we have learned from our life experiences with younger friends and our grandchildren.

Barbara Reid Interview
Barbara Reid talks about her experience before and during 'lockdown'. A busy person, who's looking forward to company and Scottish Country dancing again, Barbara explains what's important to her in the local community and online.
Moira Bruse Interview
Moira talks about the negative way older people are portrayed. "Society", she says, "should recognise the vital role older people play."
John Thompson Interview
John Thompson's life was saved by the NHS and he speaks of his admiration. Older people, he says, are quite stoic and have found ways to get through lockdown. 'We're a fine bunch with a lot of life left!'
Yvonne Dalziel
Yvonne Dalziel is a novelist and recent graduate with a Masters in Creative Writing. She's angry about the way older people have been portrayed during the COVID crisis. She's been writing during lockdown but is looking forward to seeing her grandchildren and going to the hairdressers.
Eileen Wallace
Eileen is a Trustee of the Scottish Older People's Assembly. She talks about her experience of 'lockdown', her love of swimming at Stirling University and why we need to portray older people as active and positive to counteract negative stereotypes.
Neena Agarwa
Neena Agarwal explains why 'lockdown hasn't been all negative. She talks about connecting her support group online and combatting isolation. Older people have wisdom and should be given opportunities to make their own decisions.
